The Final Step to Perfect Emergence: Closing the Furrow from the Bottom Up
You can have the best seed and the most accurate placement, but if the furrow isn’t closed correctly, your yield potential is at risk. Traditional closing wheels often struggle in heavy or no-till soils, either leaving air pockets around the seed or compacting the surface so hard that emergence is delayed.
FurrowForce™ is an adaptable, two-stage closing system that removes the guesswork. It doesn’t just push soil over the top; it uses a unique two-stage process to fracture the sidewall, eliminate air pockets, and firm the soil to retain moisture for rapid, even germination.
The Science of a Two-Stage Close
Unlike standard closing systems that have been virtually unchanged for 40 years, FurrowForce rethink the process in two distinct steps:
Stage 1: Fracture and Close
Notched wheels work to close the seed furrow from the bottom up. By fracturing the sidewall, the system eliminates the air pockets that cause seeds to dry out, ensuring the seed is fully encased in moist soil—even in extreme no-till conditions.
Stage 2: Firm and Stitch
Following the notched wheels, the second-stage “stitch” wheels carry specific weight to firm the soil surface. This manages soil density to maintain moisture and prevent the seed environment from drying out, which is a common issue in spring tillage.
Manual Control or Full Automation?
At Vantage, we offer FurrowForce in three configurations to suit your farm’s level of tech:
-
Manual Setup: Adjust the air bags to a target pressure before you start. Once set, they maintain that pressure across the entire planter.
-
Sensing Mode: Add load cells and a 20|20® Monitor to see real-time metrics in the cab, including closing margin and uniformity. You can then make manual adjustments based on live data.
-
Fully Automated (The Gold Standard): Load cells on every row measure soil density changes instantly. The system automatically adjusts the pressure row-by-row as you drive, ensuring every seed gets the exact same closing environment regardless of soil variability.
Customisable for Your Soil Conditions
We know that a farm in the Midlands has different needs than one in West Cork. FurrowForce is fully customisable:
-
Curved Notch Wheel: The best all-around performer for fracturing and closing.
-
Smooth Wheel: Ideal for shallow-planted crops or loose, sandy soils.
-
Dimple Wheel: Designed for aggressive fracturing in wet, heavy clays or high-residue cover crops.
-
Rock Guards: Essential for stony ground, preventing debris from interfering with the closing discs.
Proven Results: The Yield Advantage
Precision Planting research over 50+ plot fields shows that moving to an automated FurrowForce system delivers an average yield gain of +3.6 Bu/A (approx. 0.25 t/ha). By destroying the evidence of the furrow, you ensure that roots can grow freely without navigating density changes, leading to a stronger, more resilient plant.
